Ways to Increase Your N.E.A.T.
It has been said that we should "eat less, move more." This approach is technically a place to start, but nowadays, so many other factors come into play besides energy in versus energy out. Many different factors contribute to our health and overall results, including activity level, hormones, stress, sleep, gut health, and more.
As a society as a whole, we are moving less and less. Children are on their tablets, playing games instead of being outside all day riding bikes until super. Americans are sitting at desks all day staring at screens or on their phones, then coming home and staring at the television.
Did you know:
Americans sit 11 hours on average.
65% of Americans watch television for two or more hours daily.
Women are more likely to lead more sedentary lives than men.
20% of all deaths of people age 35 and older are attributed to lack of physical activity.
A great place to start is by increasing your N.E.A.T (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis). These are considered steps we are taking throughout the day, that does not take away time from your other activity. Basically, these are steps we "should" be taking but don't get credit for. I recommend my clients get in at least 6,000-10,000 steps daily.
If you work for a company, many companies now offer their employees an incentives program. From there, you can use your incentives towards a stand-up desk. If the weather allows, I suggest incorporating outside activities like hiking, swimming, or riding your bike.
Other helpful tips to increase your N.E.A.T:
1. Park further away.
2. Get yourself a good pair of headphones and listen to Podcast or Audiobook.
3. Opt for the stairs instead of an elevator.
4. Set the alarm on your phone to go off once an hour. Walk around your office for 5 minutes.
5. Take a 10-minute walk 3x a day.
6. Get a dog!
7. Take a short walk upon waking and before you go to bed.
8. Grab yourself a walking buddy.
9. Take the long way to get to the bathroom or your next meeting.
10. Invest in Fitbit or another tracking device and set challenges for yourself weekly.
