Transparency
One of the things that I've learned in life is never to assume what people are currently going through or what they have been through. When you look at other people's successes, you don't see the hard times; you see the outcome. This is what I like to call the "Highlight Reel," of social media.
When I was a small child, I had a stuttering problem. I was extremely creative, and had so much to say but couldn't get it out. I remember in grade school, having to go on the "special bus." This bus was for children with speaking and reading issues. About five years ago, I decided I wanted to be a public speaker. This idea was a joke considering I had horrible anxiety speaking in front of people. I was dead set on accomplishing this fear. So I started talking to myself, then in front of my pets, then in front of my family and friends, then in front of small groups for free. This year I was able to speak in front of hundreds of people. I did it, but it took five years of practice. See how you don't see everything?
Transparency is my second core value for my business, and it is something I pride myself on. I've had a lot of struggles in my life. I've made a ton of mistakes, and I continue to have quite a few failures. But, I've always gotten back up, I'll always keep moving forward.
At age 24, I opened a gym. In doing so, I was two months behind on rent and couldn't afford groceries. My mom used to sneak them into my apartment. I was almost homeless and applied for food stamps but got denied.
I grew up in an alcoholic environment. I used to use alcohol to mask my pain.
I've gained and lost 20 pounds, probably ten times over my lifespan.
I go to therapy.
I'm powerful and strong, but I am painfully sensitive.
I'm a closet introvert, and I get my energy from being alone.
I am an open book. Although it can be tough to share these parts of myself sometimes, I share these things to let people that they're not alone. I can and do relate. It can be challenging to be honest with ourselves. I've come to find that challenges only make me stronger, and if I can push through, so can you.
Transparency always wins.
